Moving and Packing Tips

Proper packing can help to save you time, make for a more organized move and also ensure all of your items make the move safely. A.J.K. Moving and any other experienced movers will stack and pack the truck in a way that should prevent any damage from occurring. However packing your items safely is the best method of ensuring a safe journey.

A.J.K. Moving is happy to help you pack if you wish, however in order to save yourself money we recommend that you do your own packing. Here are some helpful tips to save you time and make sure your stuff arrives at your new home in the same shape it left in.

You will need to have a lot of boxes available, try to come up with a rough estimate of how many you will need and then get about 25% more. Purchase good packing tape and some black felt pens to label all of your boxes. When labelling your boxes the more specific the better you will thank yourself later. Plus this will make it much easier for the movers to unload the truck without having to ask your were every box goes further saving time and money. Utilize any containers that you have for your packing such as luggage, travel bags ect.

When packing heavier items try to use smaller boxes to keep the wait down. Try placing heavier items at the bottom of a box and lighter items on top of them. This helps to keep all of your boxes at a manageable weight and keeps items from being squished.

For fragile items using news print works well and is cheap, bubble wrap can be used for especially fragile items. Wrap each individual item in newsprint and then place them inside a box with crumpled newsprint in between each item and around the inside wall of the box. Make sure that you label any boxes that are fragile so that the movers will know to take extra precautions.

 

A few other hints and tips. If possible hire your movers during the middle of the month. Most movers including AJK offer discounts at this time because it is much quieter then the end and beginning of the month. Expect a cheaper rate between the 7th to the 23rd of each month. Rates begin at $49/hour for 1 man and a van.

 

Estimated time is as follows

1 bedroom = 2-3 hours

2 bedrooms = 3-4 hours

3 bedrooms+ = 5-6 hours+

 

If you are moving in or out of an apartment you can expect the move to take an hour or two longer because of the use of an elevator. In order to make the move quicker and cheaper is tor schedule your move in with the building manager and have an elevator locked for your use.
